“A house divided…”

July 4, 2011

Abraham Lincoln warned during the darker days of the American Civil War that, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Many do not realize the Biblical origins of the quote from Mark 3:24, spoken by Jesus Christ:

Mark 3:24-29 (NIV)
[24] “If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. [25] If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. [26] And if Satan opposes himself and is divided, he cannot stand; his end has come. [27] In fact, no one can enter a strong man’s house without first tying him up. Then he can plunder the strong man’s house. [28] Truly I tell you, people can be forgiven all their sins and every slander they utter, [29] but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; they are guilty of an eternal sin.”

A very civil Republican primary has turned negative over just the last few days, and attacks are being made indirectly against fellow Republicans. Of course, we recollect Ronald Reagan’s 11th commandment, “Speak ill of no fellow Republican.” Although there are strong differences of opinion amongst candidates, the decision of who really represents our party must be left up to our fellow Republicans. Will we be able to come together as a group and take on the Democrats and their big government, liberal agenda? Will we be able to move forward as a cohesive team? Or will they be able to take another seat without competition? Will the Grand Old Party split for good?
